On Sunday, May 22, 2011 at 5:34pm, an EF5 tornado with winds over 200 mph tore through the city of Joplin, Missouri. In 38 minutes, the tornado left this southwestern Missouri city of 50,000 with a 14-mile path of complete destruction, including 10 demolished publicschools, 7,000 destroyed homes, 159 deaths, 18,000 ruined cars, 5,000 displaced workers, an insured estimated loss of $1-3 billion, and the total loss of St. John’s Regional Medical Center. In 90 minutes, the staff at St. John’s miraculously assessed each of its surviving 183 patients’ needs; identified any means of available transportation, including pickup trucks; and evacuated the entire hospital. The powerful tornado winds scattered medical records, supplies, and medications for miles, with some even being found in neighboring counties.
